Despite what you may have read on the internet, unsecured credit cards are going to require an approval process. In other words, there is no guarantee that you’ll get approved for an unsecured credit card. However, almost everybody gets approved for secured credit cards.

The reason why almost everybody gets approved for secured credit cards is because the purpose of these cards is to help people who have bad credit or no credit build to rebuild their credit scores. The other reason why almost everybody gets approved is because the credit card is secured. This means that you’re putting your own money up to “secure” the line of credit.

Why you should get a secured credit card first

When you have bad credit or no credit, you really want to apply for a secured credit card rather than an unsecured credit card. This is especially true if you have bad credit. Sometimes you can get an unsecured credit card with no credit, but it’s unlikely if you have really bad credit.

Once you’ve had the secured credit card for a few months and you have rebuilt your credit score by using it regularly and making the payments, you can then apply for an unsecured credit card. By going this route you are steadily rebuilding your credit, and it’s the most effective way.

If you’re unfamiliar with how credit cards generally work, you can read my article on secured credit cards that explains it all in depth.

You should remove negative items from your credit report

In addition to getting a secured credit card, to rebuild your credit score, you also want to make sure you remove late payments and remove collections from your credit report. By following all of these steps, it’s actually quite easy to improve your credit score within a matter of months and be in a great position to apply for an unsecured credit card and thereby improve your score even more.

Now if you’re ready to apply for a secured credit card and start rebuilding your credit score, there are many options out there that will help you improve your credit.

One of my reader’s favorite secured credit cards is the Open Sky Secured Visa Credit Card. The good thing about this card is that there is no credit check. Therefore, you’ll more than likely get approved no matter what your credit score is.
